Creative Industry Research

I have chosen to research two creative industry areas that I would like  to explore in the future. These will be Film and Video and Design. I have always been interested in the film/video industry as well as the design, but I have been doing more design work than film work.

Film and Video Industry |

History in the UK

  • The UK has created some of the most influential and celebrated cinema and television in the world. Its long history in filmmaking and TV production is recognised globally, with much of the world’s best-loved and most critically-acclaimed screen content made in the UK
  • The UK’s independent television production sector is stronger than ever, creating formats and content that are coveted by buyers the world over. The TV exports business is worth more than £1.28bn, with no country exporting more TV formats than the UK. (Source: 2014 UK Television Exports Survey, Pact). International revenues for UK TV production companies grew by a 13.2 per cent compound annual growth rate between 2010 and 2016 (Source: 2017 Pact Census).
  • In cinema, the diverse array of British-made films, as well as talent both in front of and behind the camera, are celebrated and in great demand, continually winning major awards. British production and post-production teams are highly valued by Hollywood, with many of the biggest box offices success of recent years filmed in the UK.

Creativity and innovation

  • UK filmmakers and TV producers are recognised around the world for their craft, originality and creativity. It is inconceivable that the likes of The OfficeWallace and GromitThe Thick of It and The Queen could have been made in any other country.
  • The UK’s visual effects industry often leads the way in innovation – the CGI which wowed audiences in GravityThe Dark Knight Rises and the Harry Potter series was all created by UK-based VFX houses.

Ongoing Growth

  • The film and television sector is a major contributor to the UK creative industries economy. The core UK film industry contributes over £4.6 billion to UK GDP and supports over 117,00 jobs, taking into account direct and indirect employment. (Source: Oxford Economics study for the BFI)
  • The independent TV production industry is worth about £2.5bn a year in revenue (Source: Pact 2017 Census) . In just 10 years, indie TV production has grown from a cottage industry to a world-beating multi-billion pound sector. Indie TV production companies have shown their innovative instincts, first utilising their intellectual property to dominate television programming in the UK – and now the world. They are expert in exploiting their intellectual property in new markets.

Competitive Market

  • Tax reliefs for film, high-end television and animation have made production in the UK more attractive than ever. The reliefs are tempting UK productions back to Britain – and the tax credits are also proving attractive to Hollywood and major US television companies. The UK has a long history of negotiating successful co-productions with international partners, and attracting inward investment from the likes of Warner Bros, Disney and other major studios.

Design Industry |

Overview

  • The UK has the second-largest design sector in the world and the largest design industry in Europe.
  • The UK is recognised for the high quality of its designers. It is one of the most established design industries in the world, building on design and innovation dating back to the Royal Society of Arts’ support of open innovation in the mid-18th century and the great industrial designers and innovators of the first Industrial Revolution, including Stephenson, Brunel and Telford.
  • The UK applies for the most trademarks within Europe and ranks fourth in the world for number of applications.
  • The UK ranks fourth in the world for design exports and exports 50 per cent more design than it imports. Ninety per cent of British design businesses say their main competition comes from within the UK.
